Burglars Target Mid-Michigan Churches

MOUNT PLEASANT (WWJ) – Churches in Isabella County and in the Mount Pleasant being targeted by thieves. So far this month, more than a half-dozen churches have been burglarized.

WWJ Newsradio 950 spoke with Mount Pleasant Police Department spokesman Jeff Brown who said whomever is responsible is stealing everything from small items to valuables.

“They’re stealing things such as gaming systems, or computers, some cash. In ours they took some candy, soda pop and things like that … (an) autographed baseball,” Brown said.

Brown says the churches are now taking steps to protect themselves.

“They’re taking a little more precautions with their security levels, as far as ways they’re securing their facility.  They’re also looking into adding surveillance systems and alarm systems,”  he said.

No one denomination is being picked on. Baptist, Presbyterian, Assemblies of God, Seventh-day Adventist are among the churches burglarized.

Brown said he can’t imagine what kind of people would steal from a church, but he’s anxious to see them caught.

Meantime, police in Wyandotte are looking for a man who made off with thousands of dollars from the Easter Sunday collection plates at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. (More on this).
